Water Balloon Math

Wow it seems so long since I have been able to share any kind of ‘new’ learning type thing. However a few weeks ago, I was able to try out a new idea.

We were just at the start of a big heat wave here. I had a bucket of water balloons and wanted to do something more than watching my kid smash them one after another directly in the same spot. Not to mention she was starting to struggle with the summer laziness that happens. So I sat down with a permanent marker and started.

I wrote math problems on each balloon a different problem, keeping track of the answers. Simple math problems seeing we are only going to start 1st grade this fall.

I than to my answer sheet outside and with a piece of chalk wrote all the answers on the ground. In no random order than trying to ensure no two answers were directly next to the previous answer.

So as she pulled each balloon out she had to solve the math problem, than locate the answer on the ground. When she did she than was to smash the water balloon on it.
